Lavinia Wheeler had watched as war had torn her world apart over the past three years When the Civil War comes to her doorstep, her generosity in opening her house as a hospital brings a change in her life far beyond any blessing she could have dreamed of or asked for.

Changes come with a price between dealing with the Yankee-hating townsfolk, her former slaves, a passel of wounded Yankees, a government that takes a dim view of people who aid the enemy, and a group of raiders that is ravaging the countryside, Lavinia isn't sure that she has timeto care for herself.

Cavalry Sergeant Asa Sheppard was given the assignment to guard Miss Wheeler's treasures as a way to let him rest from the wound and exhaustion that had nearly sapped his will to live. Dealing with the peppery woman and facing the dangers beside her cures his wounds. He wonders if it will drive him mad.

The Safeguard A Novel of Georgia in 1864 edition by D M Wilder Romance eBooks

This is one of those stories that drew me in, one scene at a time, until I was living the Civil War with the characters. Miss Lavinia, our heroine, is a spinster, possibly because of her tendency to speak her mind, more so than the typical southern belle, as well as the inborn wisdom that allowed her to recognize fortune hunters when they courted her. A woman of great courage and competency, she nevertheless admires her forefathers from the Revolutionary period and doesn’t recognize that bravery in herself, even though she steps out after a horrendous battle and immediately offers aid and comfort to the wounded of both armies.
In an effort to save her family’s collection of Revolutionary pottery, she approaches a Union General and asks for a guard. After learning of her generosity, he indeed appoints a Safeguard for herself and her property, and not just any guard. His choice was handpicked to be honest, generous, honorable, and handsome. And although wounded, Asa turns out to be all those things and more.
Asa and Lavinia join forces to keep her plantation and the nearby town safe and secure in spite of the horrendous dangers of the times. He goes above and beyond to protect her and hers, whether from marauders, local firebrands, or a malicious houseguest who might be the biggest danger of all. Together they weather terrible things, as well as a few funny ones, and their feelings grow. But happy endings are never guaranteed, especially in wartime.

The Safeguard A Novel of Georgia in 1864 edition by D M Wilder Romance eBooks Reviews

This is a truly amazing book as it depicts life on a Georgia plantation during the last year and a half of the American Civil war. The characters and the situations they are in seam so real you feel you are an integral part of the story. I especially like the way the author does not get in a rush to finish the book, but keeps the pace even all the way through the narrative. If you like stories of the American Civil War period this is a must read.
Part of the reason I enjoy historic fiction is to learn more about history. So when I can be entertained and educated at the same time, I really feel like I have received a bonus. This book was such a joy to read, the characters very realistic and engaging, and yet there were tidbits of the era I never knew about. I really enjoyed it, a nice refreshing love story that didn't get all graphic or sappy. So in all respects, I think this book was a great find and well worth the price.

If I missed anything, it would have been a picture of the ugly pot that the needed such safeguarding -- that would have been perfect!
This was an enjoyable book. I liked the characters and the way they were developed. I liked the way Ms. Wilder brought out the plot line involving both Yankee foragers and Confederate irregulars. I found some of Ms. Wilder's premises to be too much, I could believe a woman opening her home to wounded but I could not envision her kindness to the Yankees. It was a bit of a stretch for me for her to have only freed men working on her plantation. So if you want an enjoyable fairytale of Georgia during the Civil War then this book is okay. If you want a book describing the feeling of the Southern home folks during the Civil War this book is not what you want.
This week marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Would you believe Minnesota and Virginia are still at odds over the capture... and sought return... of a battle flag from that battle? This isn't the first inter-state squabble over a Civil War flag, and it isn't likely to be the last. More than one die-hard Southerner still flies a Confederate flag, and refers to the Civil War as the "War of Yankee Aggression."

That's TODAY.

How do you think it was DURING the war when an injured Union soldier is ordered to safeguard a Georgia lady and her possessions, including her town, which happens to be populated by staunch Confederate supporters? Think it's possible for sworn enemies to become... friends? Can decency survive in the face of atrocities and death? Can beauty and love be salvaged in the midst of war and betrayal?

Wilder presents a unique, and enjoyable, tale of the Civil War, where the expected prejudice, hatred, and distrust abound, but where, if given a chance, decency and honor can also lead to hope.
For readers who enjoy exceptional historic fiction, Civil War fiction or romantic fiction, THE SAFEGUARD A NOVEL OF GEORGIA IN 1864 is one novel I recommend as a must read.

When Union troops crossed through Northwest Georgia during Sherman’s march on Atlanta, the mistress of a plantation showed compassion for all wounded soldiers, and opened her home as a hospital where she took it upon herself to care for these men. So impressed by her actions, the Union commander avoided foraging of her plantation and the adjacent town. As the Union forces continued their march to Atlanta, the General left a Safeguard, a wounded Union soldier, to protect the plantation (the mistress and hospitalized soldiers) and the town. Once Union forces vacated, bands of outcasts pillaged, raped and murdered in the communities left unprotected behind Union lines. The Union Safeguard became entangled providing protection against overwhelming odds to a community sympathetic to the Confederacy but concerned for their safety.

The storytelling by the author is fantastic. All characters are well developed, and this reader quickly developed empathy for them…. Even actions of the antagonists found my understanding and sympathy. I found this story a better portrayal of this time in history than GONE WITH THE WIND.

Disclaimer I have communicated with the author, Diana Wilder, for about two years on authors’ threads. I finally decided to place her novel on my reading list. I am very happy I did. Now that I’ve read this work, she has become one of my all-time favorite authors.
